About the Author

Joe Lambert founded the Center for Digital Storytelling (formerly the San Francisco Digital Media Center) in 1994, with his wife Nina Mullen and colleague Dana Atchley. Together they developed a unique computer training and arts program around the Digital Storytelling Workshop. This process grew out of Joe's long running collaboration with Dana on the solo theatrical multimedia work Next Exit. Since then, Joe and his organization have traveled the world to spread the practice of digital storytelling.

I felt this was a great review of the uses and implementation of digital storytelling. There are other texts that might be better within specific disciplines like education (my bias). For video game design, narration, etc - I found this workable and sophisticated.

About the Author
Stephen P. Robbins received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He previously worked for the shell Oil Company and Reynolds Metals Company and has taughtat the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Concordia University in Montreal, the University of Baltimore, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and San Diego State University. Dr. Robbins; research interests have focused on conflict, power and politics in organizations, behavioral decision making, and the development of effective interpersonal skills. His articles on these and other topics have appeared in such journals as Business Horizons, California Management Review, Business and Economic Perspectives, International Management, Management Review, Canadian Personnel and Industrial relations, and Journal of Management Education.

Dr. Robbins is a best-selling textbook author in the areas of management and organizational behavior. His books have sold in excess of three million copies and are currently used by students in more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities, and have been translated into16 languages.

Dr. Robbins also actively participates in masters' track competition. Since turning 50 in 1993, he has set numerous indoor and outdoor age-group world sprint records. This book includes a SAL code

The Amazon version of the Organizational Behavior textbook does not include access to the Self Assessment Library or SAL, that some courses require. Purchasing this gives a paper version, cd-rom, and the online SAL version if it is needed for your class. If not do not bother with this book. That said the textbook plus this addon new was still wayyyyyy cheaper than buying used at my bookstore. If you purchase the Organizational Behavior textbook used this book will provide a code for it. Buying this from amazon is cheaper than purchasing the code separately from Pearson Higher Ed., the publisher of this book.

Required Material For Organtizational Behavior Course

I purchased the Self-Assessment Library for a major paper assignment in my management course. The book was reasonably priced on amazon and being a amazon prime member gave me a discount/free shipping. I like that the book comes with a CD in the back, which allows you to take the assessments on your computer instead of in the book. The calculations of the assessments can be tricky, so I would suggest using the CD to take the assessments. It also comes with an access code that provides premium online content.

This is an excellent book on solar sailing. What I like best about it is that it gives not only useful results for several mission application case studies but the means to derive those results for oneself.

The book begins with a history of the topic and some possible applications, as well as some brief comparisons with other forms of propulsion and a couple of important performance metrics (in particular, the characteristic acceleration). Next is a discussion of radiation pressure, where we start by being carefully walked through the calculation of the force on a perfectly reflecting sail. That gets us in the right mood to examine radiative transfer methods, effects of a non-zero area for the solar disc, and solar sail force models for realistic sails.

After that, McInnes discusses solar sail design parameters, sail materials, sail structures, and sail configurations. That includes an excellent introduction to packing, deployment, and control issues.

Now we get to my favorite chapters: solar sail orbital dynamics, for both Keplerian and non-Keplerian orbits (both Sun-centered and planet-centered). The whole point of using solar sails is to make good use of a small but constant thrust, so a main application is to "levitate" the orbit above the Sun or above a planet. McInnes examines the characteristics, controllabilty, and stability of some of these orbits. And he then obtains results for orbits near Lagrange points (both planetary and lunar).

Few books in any field do as good a job at getting the reader up to speed on a topic. A person who has completed this book ought to be able to delve into any of the most recent literature in the field without fear.

The most comprehensive source on solar sailing

"Solar Sailing" is the most comprehensive book yet written on solar sailing. This is suggested by the introduction, which gives the history of solar sailing, discusses the basic principles, summarizes the topics of the rest of the book, and concludes with a rich list of references to further material. What follows are six more chapters that delve into the topics of solar sailing: solar radiation pressure, design, orbital mechanics, non-Keplerian orbits, mission applications, and laser sailing. In addition to being an excellent resource on both basic and advanced solar sailing principles, "Solar Sailing" also provides the very latest information on mission applications which are under study right now in chapter 6, like the Geostorm mission for early detection of geomagnetic storms and the sun-synchronous Mercury orbiter. Chapter 3, in addition to discussing solar sail design, describes several historical solar sail designs, mostly from the race to the moon and Mars proposed for the early 1990's.
Each chapter begins with an introduction to the concepts, then discusses them in increasing detail, starting with basic concepts that a beginner or enthusiast can use, and ending with topics that are useful for a detailed engineering analysis. A Equations are provided at every level, so a reader can immediately begin using the material in the book to study solar sailing for themselves. For example, the chapter on radiation pressure begins with a the history of the topic and quantum and electromagnetic explanations for light pressure. Following this are increasingly detailed discussions of the force acting on a solar sail, ranging from perfectly flat and reflective sails and treating the sun as a point, to radiative transfer methods for treating the sun as a disk-shaped light source and curved sails with imperfect reflection.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in solar sailing, from beginners to professionals. Although some of the material in this book can be found in other sources, like technical journals, this book organizes the information in a form that is immediately useful, and covers the basics required to understand the more advanced topics.

The best book on The Authority of the Believer

This book by the great Dr. Sumrall, following in John Macmillan's wonderful teaching footsteps, is the best book I have read on the subject of the Authority of the Believer in Christ Jesus. Concise, precise, practical and tactical spiritual insight from a man of God who knew, and who dealt with difficult issues concerning the overcoming power needed for the Christian and the power daily available to all who will come to Christ by faith, stand on His Word and take the position offered to us in Him. Seated in Christ as taught in the book of Ephesians, and knowledge of that position, is overcoming power. I highly recommend this book to all who love to maintain daily victory and joy in Christ, and to all who seek it.

Well Worth Reading

Most people seem to either love or hate Jim Cramer. I'm actually sort of in the middle, he does have some good ideas and insights mixed in with a lot of bombast (see Mad Money). I've been investing and doing a lot of reading in this area since the 1970's, and, for me anyway, I discovered that if I came away with just one or two new ideas after reading a book it was well worth the time it took to read it. The trick is to take away what you can use in your personal investing approach and ignore everything else. No one, not Jim Cramer, not anyone else, has all the answers. This book actually touches several different areas when it comes to investing. Most of it is more of how to think about investing, and how to approach it, which is actually a good thing. And there is something here for almost everyone, hence the need to pick and choose, because if you try to incorporate all the ideas in this book you will be a buy-and-hold fundamental investing technical chartist, while taking into account who the CEO is. A tall order, to say the least. So if this is your actual first book on investing, might not be the best choice to start with. For someone who has already established an investing style, there is a lot of good stuff in here, at least for more traditional investors like myself. There is a whole section about charting stock patterns, which I didn't even bother with, because for me, using past performance charting to predict future stock moves is akin to reading chicken entrails. But hey, Cramer is a millionaire and I'm not, so who knows?
There is actually quite a bit in this book that was helpful to me, in fact a lot more than I had initially anticipated: his explanation on how a stock price can move for no apparent reason; how index funds, futures, and ETF's have had unintended consequences; the chapters "Seven Major Themes Built To Last" and "CEO's: The Bankable 21". There is also a very helpful segment called Hidden Metrics where he discusses several different sectors and then gives a best-in-breed recommendation for each sector. Lots of good ideas for further consideration and research right there. There's even more good stuff, but I'll stop here. I probably took away much more from this book than the vast majority of investing books that I have read, and believe me, I've read plenty. In fact, after further review and consideration, I decided to bump my initial star rating from a four to a five. I would recommend that you try this book whether or not you like Jim Cramer.

Good book, lots of insight.

I bought this because I saw an interview with Cramer where he talked about the tests he applies for finding good growth stocks. This is thoroughly discussed, and very much worth reading.

This is a good book about what you need to know in order to invest, and where to find it that information. The book is loaded with information and insight throughout It's definitely worth your time even if you have read umpteen other investment books, as I have. A good summary at the end of every chapter. Cramer writes well and clearly.

I downgraded it one star because there were individual recommendations throughout the book. While this would be helpful to someone carefully studying to find out why they are best of breed and why their competition is inferior, I couldn't help thinking some people would see the discussion as a buy recommendation. All of these may be great companies in their sector, but some of these sectors get hammered pretty hard from time to time. Do not take his remarks as buy now statements.

Ch 1, on what makes a stock move will get you started thinking about the right things and looking for the right information. The way ETFs can overwhelm individual stocks was worth learning. The importance of choosing a strong sector. How bonds and stocks are related. The effect of interest rates, and the Fed. Growth rate as the most important fundamental influence. Secular growth vs cyclical.

Ch 2, what is good information from a stock owners point of view and what is not. Where to look for the information you need. What particuar metrics are important for different sectors-- eg same store sales for retail. High growth stocks, what to look for. Why to go for Best of Breed instead of third and fourth tier stocks.

Ch 3 on the 7 Major lasting themes, CH 4 on finding value in companies breaking apart, were two I had problems with. Cramer's comments and themes are valid, but exactly how to and whether you can make money investing in stocks in these themes TODAY is a lot harder. It seemed to me there's a time-value on the recommended stocks, and some of it may already be out of date. There's a lot to learn from these two chapters, but by the time you read the book, the information about individual companies and industries may have been superceded by events.

Very much worth readig. But study hard independently before investing in any stocks mentioned.

UPDATE 2 years later, 2/20/16: Definitely worth the re-read. Came away a little wiser, and hopefully better prepared for today's market. Ch 7,8 & 9 seemed especially worthwhile this time. Ch 7 is on mistakes he made in his own investing. Funny I've made the very same ones. In fact I'd bet we've all made these kinds of mistakes. Really useful to recap these step by step, hopefully to avoid them in the future. Ch 9 when to sell. Really useful chapter on selling too early and selling too late. Again, we've all left big profits on the table by selling too soon, and watched our profits disappear by holding on too long. Again step by step living thru some of these may help make these less likely.

Cramer's investment style is not my own, but you don't have to agree with his particular style of investing to benefit from this book. This is a great book for both novices and non-novices. Good enough I have market it for another go thru in a few months.

AN ESSENTIAL ROADMAP TO INVESTING IN TODAYS MARKET

Professor Siegel WROTE two great books looking back at stock market history. His first 'STOCKS FOR THE LONG RUN' evaluated market performance from 1802 to the middle 1990's. His second book 'THE FUTURE FOR INVESTORS' takes a closer look at the market from the fifties to early 2000. Jim Cramer in his excellent new book 'GETTING RICH CAREFULLY' picks up the story where these two fine books end detailing a thorough roadmap describing what you need to do to avoid the landmines and bear traps the current market have set for the unsuspecting individual investor. I don't consider this a book you can read and put on a shelf. I can see myself referring back to various sections on a periodic basis. Finally, I truly believe ,in the fullness of time, this book could very well be considered as important as Benjamin Graham's 'THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR'.

Welcome to the late 1920s. There are obvious and absolute parallels to the great bull market of the late 1990s, writes Galbraith in a new introduction dated 1997. Of course, Galbraith notes, every financial bubble since 1929 has been compared to the Great Crash, which is why this book has never been out of print since it became a bestseller in 1955.

Galbraith writes with great wit and erudition about the perilous actions of investors, and the curious inaction of the government. He notes that the problem wasn't a scarcity of securities to buy and sell; "the ingenuity and zeal with which companies were devised in which securities might be sold was as remarkable as anything." Those words become strikingly relevant in light of revenue-negative start-up companies coming into the market each week in the 1990s, along with fragmented pieces of established companies, like real estate and bottling plants. Of course, the 1920s were different from the 1990s. There was no safety net below citizens, no unemployment insurance or Social Security. And today we don't have the creepy investment trusts--in which shares of companies that held some stocks and bonds were sold for several times the assets' market value. But, boy, are the similarities spooky, particularly the prevailing trend at the time toward corporate mergers and industry consolidations--not to mention all the partially informed people who imagined themselves to be financial geniuses because the shares of stock they bought kept going up. --Lou Schuler

About the Author
John Kenneth Galbraith, born in 1908, was one of the twentieth century's most influential economists. He produced dozens of books and hundreds of articles on economics, politics, foreign policy and the arts, his most famous including the popular trilogy on economics, American Capitalism (1952), The Affluent Society (1958), and The New Industrial State (1967). He taught at Harvard University for many years and was also active in politics, serving as an adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. James K. Galbraith, born in 1952, teaches at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, The University of Texas at Austin, and is the author, most recently, of The Predator State: How Conservatives Abandoned the Free Market and Why Liberals Should Too (Free Press).

Great introduction to a very turbulent and complex time in US economic history.

Wonderful read. JKG is a great writer, and keeps the story going through what could be labor-some or dry economic topics. Best audience is someone interested in markets & willing to think along the way. It's not a thriller or such, where you just sit back and read. JKG likely does not get "passive" or inattentive readers. If you want to gain a perspective on what happened in 1929, you'll need to read many, many books to gain a full understanding. This is a great quick intro.

Fantastic book

This book is an extremely clear account of the stock market bubble and disastrous crash of the late 1920s. I have read quite a few financial histories, and they are often quite difficult going. However, Mr. Galbraith's account is a pleasure to read, not least because of his very dry wit. The major drawback to the book is that despite the fact that it has been continuously in print since 1955, we have kept on falling into the same trap over and over, leading to unhappy thoughts about our wise leaders.

I've just read this book for the third time in the last 30 years. It is eerily relevant to understanding the financial markets, including the post-bubble declines after 2000 and 2007, as it is 1929 and the years immediately after. Also, it is the opposite of dry reading. Enjoyable, understandable, and enlightening. You won't regret reading it.
