When the United States entered the Great War in April of 1917, there were few officers with any staff training, and none had actually served on large, complex staffs in combat. This work traces the development of the staff of the AEF and describes how Pershing found the generals to command those divisions that fought on the Western Front in World War I. Many of Pershing's generals had been colonels only a few months prior to assuming command of divisions. John J. Pershing's task was to mold a diverse group of men into effective staff officers and into general officers to face the rigors of modern combat. How he accomplished this task, and how well the AEF did, is the focus of this work on the AEF's command and staff structure.

JAMES J. COOKE is Professor of History at the University of Mississippi. His most recent books are 100 Miles from Baghdad (1993), The Rainbow Division in the Great War (1994), and The U.S. Air Service in the Great War, 1917-1919 (1996), all publsihed by Praeger.

Important study of the AEF.

The Great War found the United States unprepared, as is our custom. Excluding the Spanish American War debacle, we had never really fought overseas, and there was no one in the American military in 1917with any experience in the command or management of large formations. Fortunately there was John J. Pershing, who not only had the organizational skills but the political strength to build and hold together the new armies. Pershing's Herculean tasks of finding new leadership and eliminating deadwood, training the troops (and their leaders!), tapping civilian talent for special skills, organizing new staff functions and assimilating new technologies, so reminiscent of World War II, are well described here in Cooke's usual clear and workmanlike narrative; in a work essential for the World War I bookshelf and of interest to the general reader as well.

I bought this book as I have been looking for guidance as to which direction I should manage my team, and after reading several weighty management books on this subject, I found this one to be a very concise and thought-provoking guide that leaves the reader with a much better grasp of how your team can be motivated, and (as the title says) manage people effectively. This book is a good quick overview, but it does not appear to be formatted correctly in the Kindle version. There are sections that appear to be lists that are not a list. The book mentions a table on p39. I did not find a table anywhere.

The quotations from the Scriptures are from the Swami's translations. Each day brings its salient thought to be held through the waking hours in continuous mindfulness a brief lesson amplifies this and imbeds it more deeply in the consciousness a prayer feeds and strengthens the natural upward-reaching devotional aspirations of the heart. A few lines from the Swami's sacred and illumined poems are given as a daily exercise in memorizing. Memorizing is one of the most productive of spiritual practices. It provides a rich inner library to which one can turn in the moment of emptiness or distress. A single line called up in memory will sometimes turn the thought into an entirely fresh and wholesome channel. Thus on each page will be found food for all the faculties of the aspiring spirit. The Swami's words lend themselves with peculiar aptitude to a work of this nature. His sentences have the focused, shining quality of a finely-cut gem which requires no embellishment of ornate setting. They stir the higher, holier impulses of the soul and impel to consecrated living. They carry forward by their inherent vitality and strength. The book calls for no other introduction than itself. With its tender counsel and ringing appeal it will find its way, by the force of its spiritual power, into the heart and sanctuary of every seeker whose hand it reaches. DEVAMATA. I really like the book, but want to bring up two things neglected by its author.

One is acknowledgments. "Bayesian Methods For Hackers" did not appear in a vacuum. I would like to see a hat tip to the creators of PyMC, and at least a mention of BUGS, the still-very-much-alive software which brought Bayesian methods to academic masses and inspired MCMC-engine projects like PyMC. Then there are PyMC's cousins JAGS and STAN - these can be familiar to the R crowd - and people who wrote popular books on Bayesian analysis, such as John Kruschke, the author of "Doing Bayesian Data Analysis". (I should also mention James Stone, with his "Bayes' Rule". "Bayesian Modeling Using WinBUGS" by Ioannis Ntzoufras could have had more impact, but its publisher, Wiley, sabotaged the book with greedy pricing and no-frills presentation. Looking into the near future - I see that Manning have their own "probabilistic programming" book in the works, by Avi Pfeiffer). Naming those people, programs and books would provide useful pointers to aspiring "Bayesian hackers".

The second reservation is about editorial effort. The very first page (when it used "ascribe" instead of "subscribe") told me that the manuscript had not been proof-read. As I went through the book, I found more unpolished passages, and a handful of lines capable of triggering a facepalm by a statistics professor. Now, this is not a book for statistics professors - they don't tend to use Python, for starters, while BMH assumes that you have Python installed - and the practical question is whether these issues are going to seriously frustrate or mislead the average reader. My answer is "not really". Chapter 3, for example, is dodgy, yet realistically a "hacker" can just skip or skim it. (Kudos on page 77, by the way - simple and effective). Classical, non-Bayesian statistics misunderstood and unfairly maligned? Only a stats prof will care. I think you can get through smaller slip-ups. For example, on page 15, you can quickly figure out that "lambda_" is a vector - unlike "lambda_1" and "lambda_2", which are scalar parameters - and understand what it's for, even though the author is just telling you that it's a function. Or, on page 142, you can figure out what loss function is implemented in stock_loss(), even though the text does not tell you what it is. Page 42 asks "Why is the gamma axis greater than 1?" You realize that it's Y, not gamma, and the question is asking whether the PDF of a continuous distribution can be above 1, and move on.

I find these complaints easy to overlook. Thinking "big picture", I see the first-ever accessible, engaging, visually appealing, practical, inexpensive introduction to Bayesian methods. Echoing - now in a positive way - the beginning of my review, there is a feeling of continuity, of a long-running collective project being advanced. First, a user-friendly MCMC engine is built by the BUGS team. Then, the PyMC team incorporates their MCMC engine into a programming language popular with the "data science" crowd, sprinkling Pythonesque syntax sugar over the BUGS model definition language. Finally, after a few years, a good book on PyMC shows up. Bayesian methods are now accessible to a broad, non-academic audience.

A very useful reference

This is a very informative guide to thinking about programming from a Bayesian point of view. The word hackers in the title may be misleading to some, but if you think about hackers as explorers, builders and people who like to figure out how things, work, this is an approach to reason and thinking that can open new doors to a "hacker." The math can get a little funky at times, but that's a problem for you just power through and keep reading because the math is there to help illustrate the approaches and isn't specifically required for all of the exercises.

This book is very good for engineering field who want to apply Bayesian method. I do not recommend it for statistician, unless they just want to learn how work with pymc package of python.

This charming verse story, told in a singsong rhythm, stars a moose who is determined that his family's Christmas will be "perfectly perfect." Moose "shopped till he dropped. Check," and "baked tons of tins of cookies. Check,"--but in his haste he completely forgets to buy a Christmas tree. After a long, fruitless search in the snow on Christmas Eve, he finally has to do the heroic thing: stand in a corner and become the tree himself. The crayon illustrations by Henry Cole make much of Moose's endless handlebar "moostache." The rhymes may be rather forced for some tastes--"The kids tried to make the best of it. They said 'Oh so who needs a tree?' But Moose could plainly see they were short on the glee." But perhaps that's all just part of the amoosement value. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr

Ages 3-6. The moose with the amazing mustache, last seen in Moostache (1997), is getting ready for Christmas, and he's totally organized. Baking cookies, check; sending holiday cards, check; buying gifts, check, check, check. It doesn't become apparent until Christmas Eve that one important job has been left undone: there's no Christmas tree! So Moose makes the ultimate sacrifice for his family--he lets them hang tinsel and ornaments from his long mustache, wrap lights around his antlers, and stick a star on the top of his head. The telling is amusing but odd: in the middle of the story the words start to rhyme, though the text continues to be set down on the page as prose. Consequently, librarians will want to practice before reading this aloud to a group or they're sure to stumble. The cartoon-style watercolors, however, reminiscent of Lynn Munsinger's work, are both boisterous and droll. They're especially amusing whenever Moose and his moustache come into view. The dust jacket, featuring a bedecked, bemused Moose, will draw children into the story. Ilene Cooper

A Book Full of Holiday Cheer

Mr Moose is back with his amazing and unrivaled handlebar "moosetache" to help us get ready for the holidays. He wants Christmas to be "perfectly perfect" for his family and so he's armed with his checklist to make getting ready easy and simple. First he writes and addresses all his cards, check. Then he shops 'til he drops, check. Then he wraps and ribbons, bakes and cooks and even roasts the chestnuts, check check check. And on and on, decorating and singing and checking off his list. On the night before Christmas he hangs the stockings, just so and calls his family in to see that everything is "perfectly perfect". But his kids notice a BIG problem...he forgot the Christmas tree. Off Mr Moose goes in search of a tree, any tree, but he's out of luck. There just aren't any trees left. As he comes home empty handed, he has a very clever idea to solve his problem and before you know it Mr Moose and his moosetache are decorated and standing in the corner, waiting for Santa. Margie Palatini has written an imaginative, amusing story that will charm and delight youngsters from 3-7. Her rhyming text and Henry Cole's bold, colorful and very expressive illustrations will have your little ones giggling, as they enjoy watching Mr Moose get ready for Christmas. This is a picture book filled with holiday joy and cheer and a wonderful addition to your home library.

Children will beg to hear "Mooseltoe" again and again!

What an amazing Christmas book! If there was only one Christmas book I could recommend to you, it would be this hilarious book. The 2nd class that I read this book to was laughing the whole time and joined in when it was time to say "perfectly perfect". As a teacher, you know that your students love a book when they can join along and read parts of the story with you. I love reading this book and I know you will as well. I agree with the other reviews, this book is very well written. But let's not forget about the terrific illustrations that will spark the children's interests. This will be a holiday story that will humor hearts of all ages.

Gotta love the Moose!

I fell in love with Moostache first. When I read Mooseltoe I was hooked again! My daughter is 3 and has already asked me to read it over and over. I even volunteered to read it to her class and it kept the attention of almost 10 2-3 yr olds! I have ordered 5 copies of this book(so far)to give as gifts this year. I promise you will love this book!

Joe Zirilli knows how to make money....

....simply by writing a little monoghraph and selling it for 160 bucks....I am not an academic snub, but rather a hardworking engineer that works for a financial firm helping to harness neural networks and traditional forecasting methods for the preditction of stock markets in the middle east.

I give Mr. Zirilli's book 2 stars, because he does share some insights about how to go on about predicting trends and future stock market prices.

HOWEVER having said that, I ordered the book as an electronic copy ( NO I am not mistaken..same ISBN same no of pages etc ) for only 33 bucks and as I said it served me as a little monograph to get my feet wet. For 33bucks that's what I expect and that's what I got, therefore the 33 bucks is a fair price.

Did the book show me how to build and train a net that makes money? Not really, as it is too basic. I read around in supplementary literature on technical trading, econometrics, statistics and last but not least chaos theory to finally get to the point of being able to coax a 14 to 20 day forecast out of net that is useful.

Those complaining about theory, academic snubs, sigma notation and the like...you are trying to use science and mathematics to produce a non-trivial result. To use another reviewer's remarks about another title, if you want to learn to compose / arrange great music you should not complain that the text you are consulting contain notes flat and sharp signs and other symbolism. If you are trying to learn to fly an aircraft you should not complain about having to learn about aerodynamics, navigation and meteorology. Why should it be any different with neural nets?

Get a good book. There are some around that only require a pre-requisite of college calculus and statistics and they really do provide an excellent intro into neural nets. You may want to try the following titles ( preferably in the order they are presented ):

1.) Neural Network Design ( Hagan, Beale, DeMuth)

2.) Neural Smithing ( Reeds and Marks )

3.) Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition ( Cristopher Bishop )

These titles are all available from Amazon.

You can read 1.) rather selectively ( it is well organized ) so is 2.). 3.) should be read front to back if time permits but it is rather self contained. By the way all three books combined will probably set you back a similar amount of money than Joe Zirrili's 135 pages.

Timothy Masters has a few titles on Neural Nets and Time Series prediction. Also for hands on experience try the neural network toolbox in Matlab.

Don't let some pompous snob with a Rolex talk you into spending 160 bucks in the hope that you will be able to harness neural network technology to predict stock prices. Developing neural nets tha tcan predict stocks is not easy.

If the above looks like too much effort, well then try writing a book with a similar title then pitch it for ...oh....shall we say ....50 to 100 bucks and try and sell it on the internet.

See how many fish will bite.

Maybe that will make you richer than predicting stocks with neural networks.

Good Starting Point for Financial Types

Contrary to the academic snobs this book presents a basic overview with enough general content to get you going in this area. If you are looking for a seminal book on the subject full of derivatives and summation signs compounded with footnotes to obscure books whose seminal ideas are now dated, then look elsewhere. In the retrospect the book is now 3 years old. Given that technology and markets have changed the book still remains current. For you techies still having to buy this book maybe you never applied what the author also taught in the book. Maybe a little realization that this book is also geared to make you money should have any potential buyer realize that the stock market is made up of all kinds of folks who even with no education become millionaires. Such is the difference between Europe and America. Great starting point book to move on to next level with.
