WE WERE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER. None of us are fully equipped to excel in life. Our weaknesses, blind spots, limited capabilities, and lack of experience all point to one thing-interdependence. Which is why connecting with others plays such an indispensable role in healthy development. Having access to the wisdom, experience, vision, and direction of those who have gone before can put you years ahead of where you’d be on your own. And, in addition to enhancing you own potential in all of life’s growth areas (spiritual, emotional, professional, relational, etc.), the things you’ll discover will equip you to help others as well. So why don’t we place more of a priority on developing these essential, empowering relationships? Are we uneasy with the vulnerability, assuming it will be perceived as weakness? Do we hesitate to ask, not wanting to impose on anyone else’s busy schedule? Are we reluctant to provide guidance for others, not wanting to come across as proud or self-important? Each of these factors can play a part, of course. But the main reason we miss out, according to Stanley and Clinton, is that we simply don’t understand the true nature of mentoring-a problem that is easily overcome.

About the Author
Dr. J. Robert (Bobby) Clinton is Professor of Leadership at the School of Intercultural Studies of Fuller Theological Seminary. He has coordinated the leadership concentration in the School of Intercultural Studies for more than 25 years. Bobby models and teaches the concepts of lifelong development and of the focused life, as well as the importance of mentoring to develop leaders. Before coming to Fuller, he and his wife, Marilyn, served as missionaries for Worldteam in Jamaica. His writings, besides the leadership commentary series, include numerous biblical examples of leadership development. His publications include: The Making of A Leader; Leadership Emergence Theory; Connecting—Mentoring Relationships; The Mentor Handbook; Focused Lives; Strategic Concepts— That Clarify a Focused Life; and Having a Ministry That Lasts—By Becoming a Bible Centered Leader. His major focus in writing and teaching now is to help leaders inform their leadership from the Bible.

Dr. Clinton has studied each of the books of the Bible from a leadership perspective. His book, The Bible and Leadership Values, contains that initial research on the Bible. From this study he has selected the top 25 books that contribute much to leadership thought. For each book of his Biblical Leadership Commentary Series, Dr. Clinton comments on the text from a leadership standpoint. He defines leadership concepts, which shed light on the leadership implications in the text. Further, Dr. Clinton writes short leadership articles, which further suggest the importance of Biblical insights for leadership. Fourteen leadership commentaries have been completed to date: Jonah, Nehemiah, Haggai, Obadiah, Daniel, John, 1,2 Corinthians, Philippians, Titus, 1,2 Timothy, 1, 2 Timothy.

This book was an excellent tool for my Training Methods class. There were several sections on new training methods, and explained in easy to understand terms, the proper methodology in developing a training program. I would recommend this for anyone needing help in developing a training manual, or who needs general guidelines on setting up a training program for others.

"Life in Ancient Egypt"�

Adolf Erman did a very fine job on writing this book. It basically covers what it was like to live along the Nile in Ancient times. His writing is very easy to understand and I recommend it to teachers to read to their classes. Unlike some other books, this one does not just talk about the well known pharaohs but some that I have never even heard of. He also includes many special events. This book was the best I have ever read about Egyptology and covers everything anyone would need to know.

Enduring Quality

Erman wrote this book at the end of the 19th century and it is a testament to his scholarship that the work is still as relevant today despite all our advances in archeology. The preface describes the inundation of Egypt as happening in the authors time exactly as it did for the ancient egyptians (the Aswan High Dam was not built until the 1950's). Erman concentrated on the simple aspecs of daily life as represented in paintings and statuary and he succeeds in presenting an accessible but thoroughly presented account of Egyptian daily life at all strata from Slave to Pharaoh.

This is a book that any one with more than a passing interest in ancient Egypt should own. It covers a wide range of everyday activities as well as the public spheres of justice, agriculture, religion among many others. It is well written and easy to read. Some names are given using older spellings but there is a list of the more modern spellings at the beginning of the book. In general this book tries, and in my opinion succeeds, to present ancient Egypt as much more than just the place where the pyramids and tombs were built. This book with its depth of information is an excellent starting point for more modern analyses of the civilisation. Few texts can match the penetration into all aspects of the civilisation of ancient Egypt that this book accomplishes.

Gurken Stonebiter, avatar of Durstin Firebeard, templerager of the Stonebiter clan, is in a pretty pickle. He's an axe-happy, grammatically-challenged dwarf on the hunt for blood. Thieves made off with temple property, sending him into a fit of vengeful rage. Seeing as he's a Berserker, it's in everyone's best interest not to get Gurken's hackles up. Gurken often dissolves into a fury of bloodlust, and carnage unlike anything seen in the age of men. When he finds those whom he assumes to be the aforementioned thieves, he is unable to control himself. Thus for our heroes, a master magician named Arthur and a girl-child named Pellonia, the blood flows until poor Arthur is hacked into pieces. It takes all the temple priests (and all the king's men) to put Arthur back together again. Imprisoned for their supposed crimes, Pellonia and Arthur aren't willing to sit around the dungeon on principle, and so promptly escape. They return the following morning to join Gurken on a hilarious and dangerous adventure to the Mines of Moog to recover the sacred Orb of Skzd. Along the way they face gruesome deaths at the hands of enormous arthropods, an amiable Minotaur, and excitable dragons, making them wonder what exactly they're doing on this quest in the first place.

Pellonia, for one, is much more than meets the eye, and although she has the body of a pre-pubescent girl, she is full of snark and knowledge beyond her years. Her past and fate become apparent as they meet mysterious denizens from her childhood. Arthur's ability to frequently engage in death throes only to return once more is to be admired as well as puzzled over. Unfortunately, one too many dismemberments occur and some shortcuts are taken during the resurrection process, to Arthur's utmost shame and revulsion. Gurken, with his brash temperament and willingness to confront anything that challenges them, though it be 10 times his size, is both an enviable asset and a terrible curse along the way.

I didn't see that ending coming!

In a word: Fun.

This book is split into episodes rather than chapters, each one moves us towards a common goal but each episode contains its own funny little romp featuring our main characters: Gurken, the typically short tempered dwarf (pun intended) with a penchant for hitting things with his axe. Pellonia, an exceptionally snarky young girl with some mysterious secrets and Arthur, a pedantic wizard who finds himself being murdered a lot.

Josh Powell has a certain Terry Pratchettishness about his style of writing, his characters manage to be a fresh take on classics and share hilarious and witty dialogue.

I would say that this book would be suitable for kids aged 8 and up, though it has cartoonish violence the entire story is very funny and very enjoyable to listen to. This story reminded me of �listening to Johnny and the Dead by Terry Pratchett when I was around 10 years old, it has a very similar sense of humour and enough action to keep your attention right to the end.

Our three main characters are on a quest together to retrieve the�sacred Orb of Skzd which has been stolen from the temple Gurken is charged to guard. Arthur and Pellonia die several times on this journey, but thankfully they have friends that are able to help them out in that regard - even if resurrection isn't always as straightforward as they might hope.

What did come as a surprise to me was the twist at the end, I can honestly say I didn't see it coming! Put it this way, now there's definitely enough scope to carry on adding books to the series!

Robert Ashker Kraft stands out to me as a narrator after listening to this well produced performance, bringing each of the characters to life with a selection of well executed accents and personalities. The sense of fun he brings to the story lights it up even further and made it a pleasure to listen to, Kraft was definitely an asset to this production!

If you're a fan of the Discworld series and looking for something new to get your teeth into, I would absolutely recommend this audiobook.

"The Berserker and the Pedant"... a wonderful and unusual, fantasy adventure... 5 Stars

"The Berserker and the Pedant: The Complete First Season" is a fantasy adventure series by author Josh Powell.
This Kindle e-book compilation consisted of 18 short episodes, totaling approximately 117 printed pages and sold for $2.99 at time of writing this review.

Please Note: I was involved in a Beta read of this novel at the author's request.

General Theme (minor spoilers)

The Orb of Skzd has gone missing from the temple. And as a result, fate throws together three unlikely adventurers in an attempt to find the thief and retrieve the missing artifact.
Our unlikely heroes are... Gurken Stonebiter, a berserker dwarf; Pellonia, a young girl; and Arthur, a level 10 wizard with a strong predilection for dying and being resurrected. Their quest takes them on a highly improbable fantasy adventure, filled with mythological creatures, dragons, trolls, giant ants and even some off-world alien creatures.

Some thoughts on "The Beserker and the Pedant"...

1.) well written and edited.

2.) each of the eighteen episodes deal with a new development or spin-off from the previous one.

3.) almost non-stop action, most of which were a result of encounters and battles. A dwarf in a berserker rage is a wild and lethal thing to behold... but only from a respectable distance. ;)

4.) humor... the fact that Gurken was grammatically challenged and Arthur was a pedant (a person excessively concerned with minor details and rules) led to many spontaneous and clever word play situations. Also, there were many dire events that lent themselves perfectly to a gallows type of humor, often filled with ironic and sarcastic repartee.

5.) character and character development... our heroes were so over the top, yet at the same time, so basic, so down to earth, that it was almost impossible not to like them and root for them as they repeatedly hop from one frying pan to another while trying to avoid being singed by the flame.

6.) cover art... the perfect image, truly reflecting the subtle nuances of the tale within.

Impressions:
I book I truly enjoyed... once I looked up the definition of 'pedant' and got to understand that this was NOT a tale about a magical pendant nor a baby (ped) ant... lol.
A non-stop, tongue-in-cheek fantasy adventure that was both highly entertaining while at the same time, admittedly, frankly absurd.
But the strongest asset of this book, was not the story itself (and it was very good), but rather the truly wondrous characters the populated its pages and brought this unusual tale to life.
So relax, find a comfortable chair, have some snacks handy and be prepared to be entertained by this preposterous, yet wonderfully written and engaging tale.

As it is... 5 Stars.

Fun and Adventurous

I have had so much fun reading a book more than I did reading The Berserker and the Pendant. It was quite the adventurous quest filled with plenty of laughter, an angry dwarf, a little girl that looked like a boy, and a grammatically correct wizard who couldn't seem to keep himself alive.

I had no idea this book would be so funny and make me laugh so hard. I couldn't get enough. This book gets right into the story and is straight and to the point, but is quite a tale to be told. The writing was smooth and filled with funny quips and easy going banter. The three MC's Gurken, Pellonia, and Arthur were such an awkward bunch to be going on a quest together, but it made it that much more interesting. They seem like a bunch of nitwits and gives this book a lighthearted feel, but gives you plenty of action. By that I mean Gurken going all berserker and cleaving his axe around, which is always fun.

I don't want to give away any of this book, but just know you will most definitely enjoy it. It is just a super fun book to read. This is not just any quest by a dwarf, a girl, and a wizard for they meet some unlikely characters who are rather bizarre, and their journey takes a most unexpected turn that you couldn't possibly image. I highly recommend that you give this book a try. Its a great book.

Terzaghi's Original Masterpiece

This text is the original full-length in English by Karl Terzaghi, the father of soil mechanics. (An earlier book was published in German in 1925.) This book provides the theroetical basis for Terzaghi's approach to the subject and provides the theoretical background for the later work, Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice. The latter book has been rewritten and updated twice by coauthors since its original introduction in the late 1940s and remains an indispensable textbook. Both books should be on every geotechnical engineer's bookshelf.

State-of-the-art soil mechanics textbook

Even tons of soil mechanics, foundation engineering and any textsbooks related to geotechnical problems are available in past 50 years, Theoretical Soil Mechanics by Terzaghi is still the best soil mechanics reference ever. It is excellent soil mechanics textbook since the contents describe not only numerical methods but also the physical meaning underlying those methods in geotech field. Many geotechnical textbooks, right now, can be categorized as applications of the soil mechanics theories contained in this textbook. I would recommend to have it as a main reference for civil engineers especially geotechnical engineers or even book-lover!

It's a classic. Terzaghi invented the science of soil mechanics with this book. Originally written in German. Amazingly, much of the book is still very useful today

I read this story, and I had to re-read. The imagery and the way the scenes are described are beautiful and very erotic. I was drawn in from the start! The way the author shows their bodies and how they interact together is just amazing. Their passion is almost feral. Honestly this is one HOT short story, but it's also very emotional. The love that is between these three is something most of us wish to experience. The passion and heat in this is amazing! This is written extremely well so please take a chance on this you won't regret it! :)

Not my favorite, but it was decent. I felt there wasn't enough scenes with Cole and Addison. So the connection between them was minimal. Maybe Reading Carter Reed spoiled me, but Cole was not as intense as Carter. The first few scenes, Cole was this intense mafia king, but then that just faltered as I kept reading. Few things that bugged me, Sia was a horrible best friend, not enough scenes with Cole and Addison, and Liam was mentioned throughout the entire book. Addison never truly moved on and Cole lived in the shadow of that. Tijan is one of my favorite authors, but this book wasn't as amazing as her other ones.

I kept flipping thru the pages hoping for something to capture my interest. I just didn't feel I knew the characters at all, not deep enough, and Cole? For a Mafia king he didn't seem alpha at all. Kind of wimpy. Sorry thus one just didn't work for me.

For fans of Mafia romances, Cole by Tijan is the next read to put on your list. It has everything the reader wants this type of book. Intrigue, mystery, a bit of darkness, and sizzling hot chemistry between the characters.

For the past year Addison Bowman has been living in a world of grief after witnessing her husband Liam get run down by a drunk driver. She has been unable to move on and get her life started again. She's going through the motions but not really living her life. After a suggestion by her best friend to move out of the house she shared with her husband to a luxury apartment in the Maucurio Building. This move is exactly what she needed to kickstart her life once again. When she meets Cole Mauricio, the owner of the building, her life is about to change once again.

Cole Mauricurio is the only surviving member and head of the Mauricio family. He's highly guarded and protected by his men. He keeps his secrets well hidden and guarded. When he meets Addison, he didn't expect the attraction to go beyond the physical sense.

As their relationship begins to become deeper, Cole's secret and connection to Addison's past could destroy it all. He would do anything to protect her. Even if it means losing her. Once Addison finds out the truth about his real identity and connections, she will have to choose what comes next in her life. Is she willing to continue feeling alive or will she walk away from the new life she has started?

Tijan once again delivered an enthralling mafia romance that kept me on the edge of my seat. The twist and turns lead the reader down a road of intrigue and the unexpected. There was also a cameo appearance by Carter Reed that validates the direction of this story. I loved the characters but felt like I needed more information about who Cole Mauricio really was. I would of liked to have experienced more from his POV. Overall it was a really good book and I would highly recommend it.

The gut wrenching story of the Mexicans who work in the fields in California. Migrant workers have never had an easy life. Coming from a desperate situation in their homeland to a desperate situation in the fields, where stoop labor pays more than they can earn anywhere else, this novel brings their pathos and courage to the front. Recommended to all who think they know what it is all about. It is not pretty, but stomach hurting food for thought. Highly recommended reading for all that care.

To Be a Man

Macho is a Spanish word that means male. But, like the Spanish words masculino and varonil, it has many more connotations than masculine, virile or just designating the male gender. The word macho is also used to describe masculine vigor, verve and fortitude. This book by Victor Villaseor portrays the fascinating story of a Mexican youth's journey to the United States in search of a better life for himself and his family. The young man's passion, pride and burning desire for freedom carry this "coming of age" story. He needs his masculine vigor, verve and fortitude to overcome the trials and tribulations of seeking justice in a "white world" trying to deny his humanity. But, it is Villaseor's description of the experiences of the Mexican farm workers in the Salinas valley, as they seek respect, dignity and the opportunity to make a decent living, that is the real story being told through the tale of a young man striving to be macho.

The Odysseus in this Odyssey is the young man Roberto Garcia. He does not want to pursue his education in a school. He believes that he does not need to know "about those things." The seventeen year old does learn the value of education as he is "coming of age" in Norte America's California. The sights and sounds of the Mexican-American workers are vividly portrayed. The dangers of crossing the border and working their way north to their "land of opportunity" in overcrowded boxcars and locked trucks is accurately told. Despite the hardships of carrying the hopeful workers to their new home, Roberto is not deterred from the journey. A week's wages in California is more than he can earn back home in the Mexican mountains of Michoacan.

The author Villaseor shows the brutality of migrant labor, Cesar Chavez organizing the workers, and the plight of the immigrant experience, as seen through the eyes of young Roberto. During these experiences Garcia grows up to be a macho man and returns home to save his family.

This story illustrates the ideals of understanding of who we are as a people; and as peoples. The story of the Mexican migrant workers, the illegal immigrants and the Mexican-Americans history has not been adequately told and included in our common history as Americans. History that is not inclusive excludes the rationale of "doing" history. Instead of going "back to the future", we need to go "forward to the past." But the stories of the past have all too often been "white washed". I recommend this work of fiction as an adjunct to our old, tired history books that have been "white washed" in that they exclude the peoples of color. Inclusive history is the story of many different peoples, men and women of various colors contributing to our world, history as it actually is. Enjoy!

The book is mainly about a boy named Roberto. He lives in Mexico with his mom, dad, and many brothers and sisters. Roberto is the one who works and feeds his family because his father does nothing but drink all the time.

Throughout the story Roberto meets a man named Juan Aguilar. He tells him that he wants to take him to the U.S. to work and bring back lots of money for his family. Even though Roberto's mom doesn't want him to go because she thinks it's a dangerous trip, he doesn't listen. So Juan Aguilar takes Roberto along with ten other men to start the journey. As they travel they have to overcome many obstacles. Do they ever make it to the U.S.? Or do they get caught and sent back? Read the book and find out what happens. This story is written in a third person's point of view.

I thought this book was an okay book because in some parts it would get interesting, and in other parts it would get boring. This type of book is for people who like violence, action and tragedy. I think this book is for people who like to cry and laugh at the same time, because it can be funny and then sad at the same time.
