This is a fun kid's book. We've enjoyed many Steven Kellogg books, but we hadn't seen this one. It's always fun to find funny details that are hidden in the drawings.

Canadian Invisible Animal Story

A moose suffered a devastating accident of being struck by a tree when his antlers were forming resulting in them now being shaped like question marks. Like all the male moose in the area he wants to mate with the most beautiful female moose in all of Canada. Since his horns are deformed, not only does he constantly receive ridicule from the other animals with taunts such as "You want to ask me something?", but he also cannot display that he is the worthy moose to breed with her by fighting and smashing antlers together the way the other males of his species do. For a long while this moose has just spied on her from afar, and over time rationalises to himself that he is not interested in her due to her beauty but instead the goodness inside her (she releases other animals from traps etc). One day (the first day of winter) the other males are far enough away so he decides he has nothing to loose and will try that pick up line on her and see what happens but her smile throws him and he can only utter a stupid line of "Nice Weather". Before he can pull himself mentally together and use the pick up line a tremendous noise shatters the moment. A trapper on a huge machine that knocks down trees in its way emerges, sees the female moose, captures her and drives off. The shy moose reads the words New York City on the number plate and sets off to find the wise old owl to tell him what it means.

He learns of the city of New York across the border but is warned he will be shot and killed long before reaching the city and even if he can somehow make it there alive he will not be able to wander the streets searching for the female moose as it'll be down to animal control for him. Luckily however the owl has also invented an invisibility potion so the moose decides he will go. During his search the moose is able to learn much about humans such as their desire to eat moose (chocolate mousse). When he eventually finds the beautiful female moose the only way they can escape comes with the ultimate question. Does he really not care about her looks or was being interested in her due to her being a good moose inside all just a lie in his head?

I like how the story never gives these moose names making it more authentic as obviously moose wouldn't give each other names in the real world. Although it does give the owl one. It's an interesting story that also pays homage to H F Saint's Memoirs of an Invisible Man and the Chevy Chase 80's film of that book with the moose at one stage dressing in the bandages, sunglasses and a robe.

If you like invisible animal stories also check out Mem Fox's classic Possum Magic. Selby's Shemozzle is another invisible animal story this time with a dog.

If you want good fiction stories about being invisible, invisible men (or kids) the best two novels are Memoirs of an Invisible Man by H. F. Saint and Smoke by Donald E Westlake. These two books are adult fiction and maybe a bit above the reading level of some kids.

If junior fiction is all your looking for then the best of this genre are My Best Friend Is Invisible (Goosebumps) by R. L. Stine, You Are Invisible: CYOA #48 by Susan Saunders, The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn, Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex, you can even get an illustrated version of H.G. Wells 1897 classic The Invisible Man (Great Illustrated Classics).

My kids love this book

A shy little boy moose is in love with a sweet girl moose. Can he overcome his shyness when his girl is kidnapped by an evil man? He talks to his super smart friend, Owl. Owl provides the perfect way for a very large moose to rescue his lady friend. Moose will become invisible.

The illustrations are precious. This book has quickly become a family favorite that we read often. The story is sweet and sends a message of never giving up and overcoming odds for love.

This, like the Bible, is a book of two halves: one long and relatively weighty, the other short and attractively simple.
The first part is Maxwell's collected stories, chosen to represent a period of time stretching from the thirties to the nineties. These all, to varying degrees follow the trademark Maxwell approach of hovering on the edges of fiction and biography. Some (The Man in the Moon, Billie Dyer) appear to be straight non-fiction, while in others the elements of fiction are stronger. All, however, are powerful evocations of the human landscape of Maxwell's childhood, or of the experiences of later life.
The second part of the work is a collection of what Maxwell calls "improvisations": fables or fairy stories which contrast strikingly with his more familiar naturalistic pieces. The connecting thread is his moving clarity of vision. Most of these stories are only a few pages long, but they combine humour and humanity in a way which makes them a permanent part of the reader's mind.
All the Days and Nights is a wonderful book, which for those familiar with Maxwell's longer works offers, in the best sense, more of the same. Or, for those new to the author, the improvisations in particular are an enticing and accessible introduction to one of America's best 20th century writers.

Forever's in Your Mind

A magnificent collection of 23 short stories and 21 'Improvisations' that span from 1939-1992. Maxwell's themes are of happiness lost, an ever changing world, seeking security in an insecure world ,how permanence is only in the memory and too, how our ideal world was anything but for the people in it-particularly black people. These tales truly haunt . The 21 'Improvisations' are fairy tales, for want of a better term, but explore the same themes and are as superb as the stories preceding them.
Maxwell is said to have helped shape the prose style of Cheever, Updike and O'Hara, and he certainly is the best of all these rolled into one. On "Desert Island" programmes, you are asked what book you would take with you (the Bible and Shakespeare aside ). William Maxwell's "All the Days and Nights" would be mine.

powerful images

I've read this book at University as I'm doing a Master on Translation. My teacher is the "official translator" of this book in Spain, so she asked us to translate a couple of short stories: "The Sound of Waves" and "All the Days and Nights". I have to say that I've liked it very much. It's amazing how Maxwell can make us see those images he has in his mind by words in a very clear way. I'm reading now the rest of the stories, but I can tell I have discovered one of my favourite authors!!!

Professor MacQueen is Professor of Private Law at University of Edinburgh and his main research interests are in the history of law, and in various areas of private law, including intellectual property, contract, delict and unjustified enrichment. He has published a wide range of books and articles in these areas. He also has an active interest in legal education, and has published an introductory guide to the study of Scots law. Charlotte Waelde is senior lecturer in law at the University of Edinburgh and is co-director of the Arts and Humanities Research Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law Her main research interests revolve around intellectual property and the Internet both individually and together. Graeme Laurie is senior lecturer in law at the University of Edinburgh and co-director of the Arts and Humanities Research Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law (http://www.law.ed.ac.uk/ahrb/). His research interests include the role of law in promoting and regulating science, medicine and technology.

About the Author
Keith Doyle has over 25 years of experience in the field of optomechanical engineering, working on a diverse range of high-performance optical instruments specializing in the multidisciplinary analysis and integrated modeling of optical systems. He is currently a Group Leader in the Engineering Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. He previously served in a variety of roles including Vice President of Sigmadyne, Inc., Senior Systems Engineer at Optical Research Associates, and a Structures Engineer at Itek Optical Systems. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in Engineering Mechanics with a minor in the Optical Sciences in 1993, and he holds a BS degree from Swarthmore College received in 1988. Dr. Doyle is an active participant in SPIE symposia, teaches short courses on optomechanics and integrated modeling, and has authored and coauthored over 30 technical papers in optomechanical engineering.

Dr. Victor Genberg PE has over 45 years of experience in the application of finite element methods to highperformance optical structures, and is a recognized expert in optomechanics. He is currently President of Sigmadyne, Inc. Prior to starting Sigmadyne, Dr. Genberg worked at Eastman Kodak for 28 years, serving as a technical specialist for commercial and military optical instruments. He is an author of SigFit, a commercially available software product for optomechanical analysis. Dr. Genberg is also a full professor (adjunct) of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rochester, where he teaches a variety of courses in finite elements, design, optimization, and optomechanics. He has over 50 publications. He received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1973.

Gregory Michels PE has worked for twenty years in optomechanical design and analysis, and is currently Vice President of Sigmadyne, Inc. He received his MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1994. He specializes in finite element analysis and design optimization of high-performance optical systems. Mr. Michels is also a software developer and technical support engineer for Sigmadyne's optomechanical analysis software product, SigFit. Prior to co-founding Sigmadyne, he worked at Eastman Kodak for five years as a structural analyst on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Mr. Michels has authored or co-authored over 25 papers in the field of integrated optomechanical analysis and teaches short courses on finite element analysis and integrated modeling.
