Lacks as a course textbook

I had this as a text for a Risk Analysis graduate level course. I am not a great fan this text for this course.

While there is good information, the author is really promoting his FRAAP process. It also lacks in the development of ideas for those that do not have a risk background. With a full 75% of the book written as appendices of many similar tables, I feel that more descriptions of the processes of analysis and assessment would have been of greater benefit.

It just isn't great

It is accurate and understandable, it is just not great. It seems to spend too much time on too few topics. About half the book is appendix, but if it is your textbook you don't have much choice.

It questions the relevance of state institutions and policies contending with the problems of farmers in Pakistan, and how donor-led policies and programmes also influence their lives. It draws on findings that have emerged from interviews of over 200 respondents including government officials, donor agency representatives and different categories of poor farmers, during eleven months of fieldwork in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab. This research reveals some divergences between state and donor policies, but it finds more prominent convergences, which in turn enable the landed rural elite to benefit from market-based and capital-intensive processes of agricultural growth, without offering substantial opportunities for poor farmers.

Reflecting the need to become less insular when discussing solutions to rural development, and demonstrating how state policies and institutions can interconnect with donor funded programmes, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Politics and Development Studies.

Syed Mohammad Ali is a post-doctoral fellow at McGill University, Canada. He holds a PhD in development anthropology and has worked in the development sector in Pakistan for fifteen years. Well Written

I have read some really crappy finance books in my day, but when I cracked this one open I quickly grew fond of it. The authors do a good job explaining everything clearly, and provide good examples. Most importantly, they clearly show what all the notations mean for the formulas. Some of the notations seem a little ridiculous at first, but after you familiarize yourself it's all pretty easy.

The authors also do a good job explaining the Black-Scholes-Merton model, which is difficult to do.

Wish i could give 10 stars!

A compelling text for those interested in the confusing world of derivatives and trading of same. Does a great job of simplifying an extremely complex topic by cutting the topics into bite sized pieces that can be studied and rehashed easily until understood completely. I am not too sure I would tackle this topic alone (unless highly experienced already) but I was fortunate to have a fantastic instructor to accompany the text and learned enormous amounts of material in a single semester.
