Review
"If you want a God-centered, gospel-saturated, and practical guide to the uncomfortable topic of modesty, look no further! Martha Peace and Kent Keller have given you a gift that will clear up what the Bible really says about the heart of modesty." --Brian H. Cosby, Author, Giving Up Gimmicks: Reclaiming Youth Ministry from an Entertainment Culture

"Martha and Kent have had long-time ministries devoted to knowing the Word of God deeply and applying the Word of God practically to the everyday issues of life. Modesty is a sensitive subject that needs to be taught year by year as styles change and bodies change. Martha and Kent use their diverse experiences and perspectives to carefully apply the Bible's teaching on the heart of modesty. We highly recommend it to you." --John and Lynn Crotts

"Martha Peace and Kent Keller have provided an invaluable resource for teenaged girls on the oft-overlooked topic of modesty. This well organized book asks all the right questions and systematically answers them by the use of biblical truth. If young women are not taught the truth about the gospel reasons for modesty, they often form opinions and habits that are difficult to change. The study of this short book will provide a framework for thinking through this issue that does not involve legalistic checklists but does involve taking seriously what a huge responsibility young women have as they make clothing choices. Martha Peace has included many practical examples from her point of view. The addition of Kent's perspective as a father is so helpful. It is refreshing to see this topic elevated to the importance that it deserves! May the Lord use it to convince, convict, and encourage." --Mary K. Mohler, Wife of R. Albert Mohler, Jr. Director of Seminary Wives Institute

Good book

The target audience for Modesty: More Than A Change of Clothes is young women: teen girls especially, though also perhaps, twenty-somethings. Martha Peace and Kent Keller contribute to each and every chapter providing dual perspectives on what modesty is and isn't. They often supplement one another, providing a balanced perspective on the subject.

As you might have guessed from the subtitle, one of the main messages of the book is that modesty isn't about what you wear, or, isn't only about what you wear. It is a heart issue. You can outwardly be modest for whatever reason, yet, still have an immodest heart-attitude.

The first part focuses on what modesty is and why it matters. (There's an insightful chapter on how guys are different from girls, and, how girls should be mindful of those differences.) The second part focuses on what the Old Testament has to say on immodesty and modesty. The third part focuses on what the New Testament says about immodesty and modesty. The fourth and final section focuses on the practice of modesty, here is where the book turns practical.

I loved how grounded the book was in Scripture. The book isn't so much about lists, rules, guidelines, or dress codes. Or about man-made lists, rules, guidelines on what is and isn't proper. The authors point out several times that each church, each denomination may have a strict almost-legalistic approach to what is and isn't proper to wear. They are not endorsing any one church's ideas. It is, instead, all about WHAT DOES THE BIBLE HAVE TO SAY ON THE SUBJECT? They examine principles in the Bible that can apply to modesty.

Here is how they define modesty:
"Modesty is an inner attitude of the heart motivated by a love for God that seeks His glory through purity and humility; it often reveals itself in words, actions, expressions, and clothes."
Here is how they define immodesty:
"Immodesty is an attitude of the heart that expresses itself with inappropriate words, actions, expressions, and/or clothes that are flirtatious, manipulative, revealing, or suggestive of sensuality or pride."

Does this definition differ from how you've always thought about modesty?

I also loved how the book discusses legalism. It had a lot of insightful things to say on the subject!

"There are at least three ways that legalism expresses itself. There is the legalism of addition, the legalism of subtraction, and the legalism of algebra."

The book ends with the focus shifting from modesty to the gospel itself. I love that they keep the gospel itself--a right relationship with God--the MAIN THING. Modesty isn't about conforming outwardly, it's about being in right fellowship with God.

helpful and balanced

As a youth pastor, I have found myself navigating the thought-provoking road of modesty. The issue seems to be everywhere I turn, from planning summer swimming events, to mission trips, to social media posts and of course to comments from church members about what the youth are wearing. So when I was mentioned in a tweet referencing the book Modesty: More Than a Change of Clothes I ordered it. I was challenged and encouraged by Martha Peace and Kent Keller. They present a helpful, biblical, balanced approach to the issue of modesty using biblical terms and providing lists of diagnostic questions to help determine the heart motivations that produce the outward actions. I highly recommend this book to help you think through the complex issue of modesty.
Peace and Keller begin the discussion by identifying the source of modesty rather than trying to treat the lack of modesty. They state, “Modesty is more than just a change of clothes. It is an attitude of the heart” (14). They go on to give this definition of modesty, “Modesty is an inner attitude of the heart motivated by a love for God that seeks his glory through purity and humility; it often reveals itself in words, actions, expressions, and clothes” (17). When we talk about modesty we need to speak as cardiologist rather than fashion police. Fashion that pleases the Lord will follow a heart that seeks to honor the Lord.
There are heart diagnostic questions scattered throughout the book. The lists on pages 19, 87, 88, and 107 are some of the best I have seen in excavating the intentions of the heart. Our intentions must first be exposed in order that the cure of the Gospel can be applied. Here is a sample, “Do you spend so much time getting your appearance ready for the day that you run out of time to get your heart ready?” (88). Diagnostic questions such as this force us to face the reality of our heart condition rather than living in denial or ignorance.
The authors are not bashful about using biblical terms as they talk about modesty. There is a summary list of scriptures and principles on page 130. Throughout the book I could not help but be jarred by the direct statements that Keller makes. Pastor Kent, as he is called throughout the book, is not worried about who wore what, and how they might get offended or think that he is singling them out; the issue is to important for that kind of stuff. Here is an example of what I mean, “We urge you, if you are convicted of the sin of immodesty, to do whatever it takes to repent for your good, for the purity of the church, and, ultimately for the glory of God!” (115). He just says what the Bible says, lets the Holy Spirit make the application to the heart, and encourages the reader to obey.
I have felt a strain with the youth in trying to figure out how to set parameters without it being seen as legalism. I do not want to foster the thought process that you can act a certain way at church but the same standards don’t apply in every area of life. This is particularly difficult in the area of modesty. Peace and Keller are helpful with the issue of consistency (127-129) and legalism throughout the book. They devote chapter nine to dealing with legalism. Legalism is a heart issue just like modesty. Keller state, “When the heart desires lustful attention, no amount of external rules will affect the heart. When the heart desires God, the heart will be modest and external rules will not be needed”(110). The answer to the heart issues is the gospel! We need Jesus to change the affections of the heart. Pastor Kent gives five ways be active in allowing Jesus to change your affections and pursue modesty.
• Pursue modesty by repenting of immodesty (135).
• Pursue modesty through a growing relationship with God (135).
• Pursue modesty by avoiding the influence of the world (136).
• Pursue modesty by developing wise friendships (137).
• Pursue modesty through a courageous delight in God (140).

I have read different things on modesty – and yet this is the best book I have read on the subject
By Stacey Patrick
Modesty: More Than a Change of Clothes is a book that gets to the heart of the issue. Modesty, is a popular topic in the church. But, here’s something we miss. Modesty isn’t solely about the outer wear, but the inner wear too.

What are our hearts wearing?

And, how can I pursue Christ in a God-honoring way?

While clothes is part of what modesty is, it isn’t the whole story.

Martha Peace and Kent Keller join up to compose this book on modesty.

Why I Recommend…

Truthfully, I have read different things on modesty – and yet this is the best book I have read on the subject. I would highly recommend it to my family, friends, fellow readers, and complete strangers. It is just that good...
