The History of AMC Motorsports: Trans-Am, Quarter-Mile, NASCAR, Bonneville and More, by Bob McClurg

When thinking of a manufacturer's racing involvement, AMC is not a manufacturer that immediately comes to mind. Yet even from the very beginning of American motorsports, the companies that became AMC had some serious commitment to motorsports. From the early Nash and Hudson models all the way through the muscle car era, AMC directly participated in racing. The success of Nash and Hudson in early NASCAR racing, AMC Javelins in Trans-Am racing, and AMC's involvement with Mark Donohue and Roger Penske in both their Trans-Am and 1970s NASCAR teams prove that AMC was "in it to win it."

The History of AMC Motorsports from veteran racing journalist Bob McClurg covers it all, from a Nash-American Motors corporate history, the first years of NASCAR, the 1960s efforts that included Trans-Am and drag racing Super Stock programs, to the Craig Breedlove land speed record efforts when 106 world records were shattered and covered by Hot Rod magazine. And let's not forget the 1970s Trans-Am championships with Donohue and Penske, and finally the NASCAR success with Bobby Allison in the always-curious-looking Matador, which is also covered here.

Never before has a single volume chronicled the events that encompass AMC racing history. Whether a hardcore racing history fan or a casual enthusiast of the AMC street offerings, The History of AMC Motorsports provides a unique showcase vital to every enthusiast's library.

Review
"I was overwhelmed by the attractiveness of the cover and the magnitude of the work. All I can say is that the author has done a magnificent job and captured the essence of the American motors program and acknowledged the individuals and the work that they accomplished on behalf of that program." (MacCoon Dick Grant Rambler Rebel SST Co-Creator 2016-02-29)

"Any fan of AMC history, performance car history and the legends behind them will enjoy the ride with McClurg behind the controls." (Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace 2016-04-25)

"Without any question, this is a definitive work on the unexpectedly rich history of America's last automotive independent." (Jim Donnelly Hemmings Muscle Machines 2016-04-26)

"... an interesting history of this overlooked, and successful, American brand." (Richard Lentinello Hemmings Classic Car 2016-05-12)

“The History of AMC Motorsports takes a thorough look at how a comparatively small manufacturer got fully-involved in a variety of motorsports disciplines and in that process its cars and drivers turned more than a few disbelieving heads. So, if a ‘little-engine-that-could-kind-of-story’ is one that you like, this book is for you.” (Herb Anastor Area Auto Racing News 2016-05-19)

Informative and enjoyable

Bob McClurg is a racing journalist that has taken on the task of researching and sharing with us the history of AMC Motorsports. We have had books that cover some car models and even some famous racing teams but this is the first history I have read of Nash-American Motors corporate history. I love that we start at the beginning with Nash and how these cars participated in events. AMC broke over 100 world records and had a strong presence at the beginning of NASCAR, Trans-Am, Drag racing, Bonneville, etc. When you read this history you will understand why the AMC era muscle car sell for a premium today. And to top it off the book is printed with CarTech standard high quality used in their hardcover books.

This AMC Motorsports book does not disappoint even if you are not a AMC guy like me,you will see all the facets to was once the last American Independent and it's several teams and operations with folks such as Roger Penske and Mark Donohue Associated with AMC racing. The first book of it's kind on just AMC Racing and a very good one.Fascinating in-depth profiles on drivers, teams and cars and the several series AMC participated it in.A shame AMC no longer exists.

Best AMC book in the Galaxy.
By Larry G. Mitchell
Bob McClurg's new AMC Motorsports book is the filet mignon, 7 course dinner of AMC books ever done so far. And it may stand as the all - time best. Stunning new color pictures never seen before. And pages and pages of them. The writing is by far superb with a depth of research unequaled ever before in any previous AMC book. Interviews with those who made AMC racing history, worked for AMC and are modern day historians, car owners of historical cars and just plain collectors. I believe this book will stand as an all time benchmark never to be equaled as the players are dying off. I salute Bob McClurg and Tech Books for bringing the AMC hobby a blockbuster book we needed. This book will NOT disappoint in any way. Bob welcomed noted AMC historians to help him with his new book and you can expect historical accuracy and a wide array of topics, articles and stories. You will learn from this book. New information and history galore. A MUST HAVE book well worth the cover price- and then some.
