Cooked: An Inner City Nursing Memoir, by Carol Karels

In May 1971, Look magazine featured an article entitled "Chicago's Cook County Hospital: A Terrible Place." The article provided an in-depth look at the largest public hospital in the country, one located on Chicago's dangerous gang-controlled and drug-infested West Side. Months later, the author, then a nave suburban teen, and one hundred other nursing students, began their training there, despite newspaper articles that warned that the hospital might close any day. At 'the County,' where nurse duties included swatting flies in the OR and delousing patients, both nurses and doctors were expected to provide care under the most desperate of circumstances. Cooked provides an inside look at the 2,000-bed ghetto hospital, often referred to as a "19th-century sick house," that provided health care to millions of Chicago's poor.

Those life-changing experiences
By j zeaman
This is a classic coming-of-age memoir, an unforgettable evocation of a time (the mid-1970s) and a place (Chicago's Cook County Hospital) when everything in America was changing all at once. The story plays out against the quest for black identity, labor struggles, the feminist revolution, the sexual revolution, Vietnam, drugs, popular music and the youth culture.

That big hulking hospital is as much a character in the story as the narrator. It is like Dickens' London or Hemingway's World War I - one of those places or situations that test us and teach us, are chaotic and traumatic, but change us forever.

The author's younger self is an innocent, but strong and smart and sensible, the kind of young protagonist that is at the heart of so many great books. It is unsentimental in relating all those things that nurses see and experience, and the rest of us wonder about, as when Karels describes a baby "slithering out" of its mother - not the way mothers typically describe their birthing experiences.

Instead of trying to evoke Mother Teresa, Karels shows that nursing is about doing good in little day-to-day acts; it's not about having some superhuman capacity for mercy so much as it is about a strong desire to help and the determination to do it well.

I'm not surprised it has gotten special recognition from the nursing profession. Throughout the book, Karels reminds readers that nurses need more support from hospitals and sufficient respect from the medical profession. But it is her character and her storytelling that make this a memorable book. It deserves to be a classic in its genre.

A MUST READ FOR NURSES OF ALL AGES!!!
By Patricia James
This book is a must read for all nurses. Focused on Cook County Hospital, where I too worked, this book is an eye-opening, sad, and sentimental journey back to the days of the Diploma Program Nursing Schools and patient dumping. The social commentary is fascinating, the description of the hospital, its patients and personnel brings back a lot of memories. Carol's sweet face on the cover of her book is a model of all the sweet young things who entered the Diploma Nursing Programs in the years prior to their demise. For those who are Diploma nurses, this is a nostalgic and evocative read. For those who didn't have the privilege of a Diploma Program education, read this and see what you missed.
Although I have gone on to higher education in nursing, I consider the Diploma Programs an irreplaceable experience in my nursing career. I feel fortunate to have been a part of this group. As for Cook County Hospital, with all of its shortcomings, I feel privileged to have been one of their nurses. I have bought many copies of this book to give to my nursing friends for Christmas.

The History and Future of Nursing; Inspiring Insight for Future Nurses
By laura n.
Carol Karels' book is many things. It documents the coming of age of a young nursing student attending nursing school in the 70s, a hospital and its staff, and the way nurses are treated on the job. Karels, who also authored some local history books, treats the readers to the history of Cook County Hospital and the surrounding parts of Chicago of the time.

"Cooked" was a highly informative, raw and exciting peek into what nursing was and has long been about: dedicated and hard work, caring attitude with a touch of idealism, creative problem-solving, and healing of the body, mind and soul. Reading about Karels' fears and anxieties and self doubt as she entered nursing school will be comforting to any student entering nursing school (to see that it's normal!), and her skepticism in her classes was thought-provoking. Her willingness to go above and beyond, even to the point of near self-sacrifice, was inspiring -- even when it nearly led her to be kicked out of nursing school for volunteering at the Benito Juarez Free Clinic. This memoir struck a clear chord with me, all the way to the very end when she detailed how the professional skills nurses will aggregate over their years of experience and education is easily spread across the many arenas of health and wellness, and is directly transposable to other work sectors due to the field's inherent flexibility.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is considering a career in nursing. It will tell you one of two things about your choice of nursing: Go for it, or run. For me and many others it has been the former. This book will be passed around my nursing school for certain!
